WordPress.com for Windows 8

Today, Microsoft released the Windows 8 Consumer Preview and with it, the Windows Store. If you were following along with the live announcement, you may have noticed that one of the apps they demonstrated on stage was our very own WordPress.com. And now, I’m proud to announce that WordPress.com for Windows 8 is available to download today.

For the last few weeks, I’ve been working on the team at Automattic that’s been building the app. We were lucky enough to get some great support from Microsoft along the way, especially Jeff Sandquist, James Senior, Ben Thompson, Jaime Rodriguez, Lora Heiny, and Nazia Zaman who gave us everything we needed to make the app shine, including hands-on help from Microsoft developers and designers.  We decided to focus on showcasing the best of WordPress.com for our first version of the app, and what better way to do that than Freshly Pressed? We’ve been highlighting WordPress.com bloggers there for years, and all of that great content is now accessible in our app.

We also built some special features just for WordPress.com users. After signing in to your account you can like and reblog posts from Freshly Pressed, or follow a blog to subscribe to it in the WordPress.com reader. Reblogging lets you share these posts with your followers, right on your own blog.

Beyond just reblogging, you can share content from any app in Windows 8 to your WordPress.com blog. Just open the Share charm, and you’ll find a posting interface customized to the type of content you’re sharing — whether that’s text selected on a web page, or a picture from your photo library.

By the way, I mentioned the huge archive of great posts in Freshly Pressed — try the Windows 8 “semantic zoom” gesture in the WordPress.com app to see a quick overview of the app by dates. It’s a really cool way to navigate once you’ve managed to scroll through several months worth of posts (it gets addictive!).

And of course (this is Automattic, after all), the app is Open Source. You can check our the source code of the app today via SVN at http://win8.svn.automattic.com and follow development of the app at the related Trac.

While it’s a simple first version, I think it’s a great way of marrying the unique Metro interface in Windows 8 with the cool stuff you can do with WordPress.com. Future versions will bring the ability to compose full posts and upload media, read the blogs and topics you follow, and much more. We hope you’ll check it out and let us know what you think.

If you’ve got the Consumer Preview, download WordPress.com for Windows 8.

Some of my colleagues who worked on the app have also posted their thoughts, including Stephane Daury, Dan Roundhill, and Nick Momrik.

It was a lot of fun working on this app. The last time I did any development for Windows was about 10 years ago using Visual Basic. How far we’ve come!

The Metro interface in completely different from anything you’ve ever seen out of Windows and I’m interested to see where it goes.

If you have a blog on WordPress.com or you like reading cool content, check out our new app and let us know what you think.

  4. Please update the WordPress client for iPad to bring it on par with the Windows 8 version. The only thing I’m currently using it for on my iPad is to approve comments and check stats. The Windows 8 version, however, looks much more usable.

  5. Can’t WAIT to check out the “Semantic Zoom” feature — super cool! I’m quite addicted to Freshly Pressed posts, so I can see this consuming a ton of time in the near future.

Now I don’t know whether to thank you … or curse you! ;)

  7. Please make the WordPress app useable! It should be able to do everything the website does and more with an amazing interface.

Right now it looks like something from the nineties, crashes constantly, doesn’t let one add pictures normally, and is just an all-around terrible app.

Please improve it. The website is awesome so clearly it’s possible to improve the app!

  10. Honestly, the way I feel about Windows 8, I don’t think I’ll never transition over. It’s a complete and utter joke and. Think I’ll stick with Windows 7. If it were up to me, I would have stuck with Windows XP.

  11. So being technologically inept, I didn’t know WordPress was tailored to specific Operating Systems? I thought it was just accessible online like Google or Facebook? Gosh, I’m disgrace to my generation (18 years old)…shouldn’t I know more?

    • You’ll always find WordPress.com at its home on the web, but we think taking advantage of the cool abilities of modern operating systems with native apps is a great way to extend the experience.

  12. Can I use this Win 8 app for blogging (writing posts, uploading medias and so on) purpose? Or it’s just good for reading and reblogging? I’m sorry I didn’t get its features right.

    • Right now, the app’s focused only on reblogging and sharing content from other apps. Much more, including a full posting interface, is in the plans. :)

    • That would be excellent! Our hardworking Mobile team has brought Freshly Pressed and the WP.com reader to our iOS and Android apps, I believe the plan is to do the same for WordPress for Windows Phone 7 as well.

  16. Major discussion on G+ (although you might not want to admit G+ exists!) about copyright issues with reblogs. Is there a block for those who really don’t want their full content being reblogged by someone else without even asking?

  17. I hope as part of your ideas for the future for this App that you will include a thought for the many self hosted WordPress sites out here. Although this will really enthuse those people that have a great many WordPress.com blogs for backlinking to their money site it would be nice to offer our readers another way to interact with our self hosted blogs.

    • Oh sorry to have forgotten to say ….”great job guys and good to see Microsoft recognizing that blogs are more than just an online diary where people record random thoughts. I love the blogging community and you are an example of why I do. Thanks for your dedication for which many are truly grateful.

    • I think that would be pretty cool! Right now we’re focused on making a really great experience for WordPress.com users, but self-hosted users are always on our minds.

    • Our plan is to bring everything you can do with the WordPress.com homepage to the app — including reading the blogs you follow and posting to your own. Stay tuned; we’ve only just begun. :)

    • Blogged about your Metro WordPress App update yesterday. Very glad about the update, especially for the ability to blog now from within the app. Like you mentioned, these are just the first iterations of the app. Glad you’ll be adding more features in the future. For example copy pasting pictures is not working, and that’s a big deal. Or it could be me in this case, I have tried via Win8 contract share, can’t get a pic into the post. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Anyway, still glad here, it is perfect for simple posting on the go. See my preview here in my blog. Thanks for you efforts on Win8!

It won’t run on xp environment sad to hear. I have two o.s. xp and 7. im trying to install a t xp but it cannot be . any idea how to ?

    • Afraid not — it’s a Metro app developed specifically for Windows 8, so it won’t work on previous versions. The good news is that if you just want to test-drive it for now, Windows 8 works well in a VM or a dual-boot scenario.

  22. Reblogged this on leaveluckforheaven and commented:
OMG I would Love to thank these guys so much. I only joined WordPress because of this app. When Windows 8 comes out I hope everyone takes a good look at this app. The Metro style user interface really shines in this app. Developers take note this is a true Windows 8 app.

  23. Might be stupid but… WTF !
    1) Open Internet Browser
    2) Log in your blog admin
    3) Add article
What is the interest to have a special APP in a desktop OS ?

    • Native apps can do things that web-based ones can’t, like take advantage of Windows 8′s sharing contracts so you can easily share content from other apps to your WordPress.com blog. We’ve got more in store, too. :)
